«He loved them to the end.» Primacy and mercy: convert the papacy

At the light of the Scripture and of the recent pontificates, the author reflects on the renewal of primatial ministry in pondering upon the features of St. Peter. At the foundation of the primacy, there is the grace of mercy: called, established and sent by mercy, Peter can be “protos” only in the manner of Christ, by entering into the mystery of the Servant. The washing of the feet constitues in this view the center of gravity of a reflexion on the primacy, with John 21 as its achievment. The reform of the papacy will have to emphasise that the petrine ministry is “agape” brought to its extreme.

Je suis persuadé que, dans une Église synodale, même l’exercice du primat pétrinien pourra recevoir une plus grande lumière. Le Pape ne se trouve pas, tout seul, au-dessus de l’Église, mais en elle comme un baptisé parmi les baptisés et dans le collège épiscopal comme évêque parmi les évêques, appelé en même temps – comme Successeur de l’apôtre Pierre – à guider l’Église de Rome qui préside dans l’amour toutes les Églises. Je rappelle la nécessité et l’urgence de penser à une conversion de la papauté1.
