Moby Dick and the Bible: Navigating on the Abyss

Moby Dick et la Bible : naviguer sur l'abîme
On the occasion of the bicentennial of Herman Melville's birth (1819-1891), the present reading of Moby Dick intends to show the relevance of this visionary work. The dramatic and symbolic density of Melville's novel derives in part from its dialogue with the biblical Scriptures, in particular with the Old Testament. Tracking the biblical figures of Ismael, Jonah, Ahab, the Leviathan and Rachel in the drama, the paper recognizes in Moby Dick a kind of life-buoy for the 21st century, assisting us to navigate on the abyss.
