Under the guise of rereadings and rewritings, it underlies the development what became our canonical Scriptures. This «further writing», as M. Fishbane and other Jewish scholars have shown, anticipated the midrashic imagination. The biblical scribes had to inscribe the new into the old, so as to let the ancient Word of God still nourish the life of the people. Their «hermeneutics of innovation» is here presented in its spirit and methods. It can only be of interest for the exegesis of the New Testament.
