Victims of abuse in the Church. For a theology of vulnerability, responsibility and healing

The massive character of abuse in the Church revealed in the recent Sauvé Report contrains us to take a fresh look at the theology of salvation in which the ecclesial body lives according the sacramental mode. Could God have abandoned to death those who have sought his face in truth and trusted the Church? We will therefore reflect on the theological status of vulnerability, on the radical nature of the evangelical counsels that allowed the abuses to take place, on the power in the Church that prevailed over authentic spiritual search, but we will also consider the Paschal mystery in this drama.

Pope Francis, guarantor of the liturgical doctrine of St Pius V

Should we oppose the motu proprio of Pope Francis Traditionis custodes to that of Benedict XVI, Summorum pontificum, which liberalised the “extraordinary” form of the Roman missal? It is appropriate to examine the principles on which the two pontiffs based themselves in order to express the concrete conditions of the celebration according to the missal of St Pius V. A return to the doctrinal principles which founded the use of the typical Roman Missal by Pius V is decisive here.

An ethics of arms manufacturing? The contemporary trap of moral complacency.

If the Church has always supported the legitimate defence and the integration of the faithful within the armies, it has never justified the production of weapons, and even less the race to perfect weaponry, especially in a world in the grip of technicism. This article on the ethics of arms production puts the Church's doctrine into perspective regarding the risk of contemporary immoralism for the twenty-first century Christian. It echoes the recent encyclical in which Pope Francis invites men of good will not to be "disturbed by being called naive for having chosen peace" (Fratelli tutti 261).

The imposition of hands in the sacrament of the sick, the power of healing in the church body

Does the imposition of hands in the sacrament of the sick have only a spiritual efficacy or should it lead to bodily healing? In order to understand the reality and meaning of this gesture, we will examine the action of Christ the healer in the Gospels, the pneumatic perspective of the sacrament and its ecclesial dimension. The originality of the sacramental gesture in contrast to alternative medicine techniques such as Reiki will then be understood.

Exercises and Theology

Unpublished translation of “Exerzitien und Theologie”, Orientierung 12 (1948), pp. 229-232. Translated from the German by Antoine Birot

In this Ignatian Jubilee Year, celebrated on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St Ignatius of Loyola, this unpublished text by a monument of twentieth-century theology reminds us how the theology of the Exercises can lead a life to set out "on the open sea" in the inner experience of the Spirit. It is then possible to 'see all things new in Christ'. Philosophy and theology can follow the Ignatian method for the care of souls. Balthasar then develops Ignatius' theological mission around the following centres: election, indifference, obedience. Translated from the German by Antoine Birot

Can we speak of a "Trinitarian inversion"? A question disputed between Balthasar and Rahner (1)

For Karl Rahner, as for Hans Urs von Balthasar, the "immanent Trinity" can only be known through the "economic Trinity". But the two theologians are at odds with each other on the issue of the Trinitarian taxis. For Rahner, it is important to guarantee the transcendence of God with respect to the world, while for Balthasar, the difference between the immanent Trinity and the economic Trinity cannot be collapsed in an abstract, one-dimensional manner. Rather, the wordly expression of the God of kenotic love leads to the recognition of a "trinitarian inversion" in the economic order of the divine persons.

About C. REYNIER, Les femmes de saint Paul. Collaboratrices de l'Apôtre des Nations, Paris, Cerf, 2020; M. QUESNEL, Paul et les femmes. Ce qu'il a écrit, ce qu'on lui a fait dire, Paris, Médiaspaul, 2021

The general theme of women in the Bible has generated a fairly large number of publications in recent years. Societal and ecclesial current events oblige. The publication of two new works devoted specifically to St. Paul is an opportunity to evaluate both the methodological issues and the results obtained.
