The Challenge of Islam

The secularized West is struggling to understand Islam because it took it for granted that all religions would disappear. Christianity also can find itself disoriented by a phenomenon that claims to supplant it. Now the history of salvation is not linear, since Christ is not only its end but also its centre. In this light, Islam can be seen as one more approach of the mystery of the only one God. As such, it deserves respect, while its chronological posteriority means no superiority, and simply the necessity of a reducing interpretation of Christianity. Acknowledging Islam is thus conceivable, as is already the case with Judaism, which is much closer and should fully participate in the dialogue between three major religions that have monotheism rather than scriptures in common.
