« Crise de la Modernité » et philosophie du Moyen Âge. Une introduction à la question théologico-politique dans l'oeuvre de Leo Strauss
François CoppensIs Strauss' teaching simply part of an anti-modern struggle? The answer is no, states the present paper. Exploring three main objects of that teaching (esoteric art of writing, socratic intellectual revolution and medieval prophetology), it points to a more adequate understanding of its stake. We have to think through the quarrel «Ancient versus Modern», and the conflict between Athens and Jerusalem: against received opinion, modern rationalism did not solve them. We are thus led to: self-conscious rationalism, or towards philosophy as a confrontation with permanent problems, much more than as a solution to those problems.
