Cultures “in labour”: idolatrous temptations and asymmetrical reciprocity

Cultures are processes, fluid and evolving. They are not defined by a timeless origin or a final destination. Far from all forms of idolatry – and the resulting fixity – the identity and authenticity of a culture lies in its capacity to hold in tension forces of construction and disintegration. No culture is providential, none is chosen. Each culture is in need of others and at the same time invited to communicate its own. In this sense, cultures are envoys to one another, in a mutual relationship that both relativizes and fertilises. In their asymmetrical reciprocity, provisional hierarchies of universalization of values can be debated. Beyond issues of the balance of power, this presupposes the concern to guarantee that cultures which are more fragile have the means to take responsibility for their future.

Comme membres d’une société, comme citoyens, ou encore comme croyants, nous ne sommes pas dissociables de notre culture. Nous ne sommes pas vraiment en mesure de l’objectiver, de la tenir à distance. Nous pouvons certes faire l’effort d’entrer dans une culture autre, de la revêtir. Mais cet effort – qu’il soit choisi (le missionnaire, l’artiste peut-être), consenti (l’expatrié) ou imposé (l’exilé, le migrant) – se fera à partir de notre culture première, « maternelle », avec ses possibilités, ses limites, sa configuration propre. Comment sauter par-dessus notre ombre ? Notre culture nous colle à la peau.

On ne proposera pas ici une énième définition de la « Culture ». Bornons-nous à quelques observations :

parler de culture individuelle est dénué de sens : la culture est, par définition, ce qui est en partage ;
