The Universal Love of the Lord of Israel. The book of Malachi

Last of the prophets and of the collections of the Old Testament according to the Catholic canon of the Scriptures, Malachi allows the Lord of the Covenant agreed with Israel to speak in clarity and in riddles. Marked by Wisdom, he condenses the Torah and the Prophets, to find himself in the gospels and all the way into the Apocalypse passing through the letter to the Romans and to the Hebrews. The keystone between the Old and the New Testaments, the shortest and densest of the Twelve Minor Prophets sets forth his message by means of numerous stylistic formulations: the Lord of Esau and of Jacob loves the nations as much as his chosen people because he is the creator Father of the one as of the other.

Malachie est le douzième et dernier de ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler les « petits prophètes » en raison de leurs textes relativement courts, assez vite désignés comme « les Douze ». Son livre conclut l’Ancien Testament selon le Canon catholique des Écritures, soit la Loi ou la Torah, les Sages et les Prophètes. C’est dire sa place stratégique dans le corpus biblique au seuil du Nouveau Testament. Elle dicte notre principe de lecture ici proposé qui consiste à laisser affleurer dès le titre et les premiers versets du chapitre 1 les réminiscences de la Torah grâce à des éléments empruntés à la structure d’alliance ; aux Prophètes ensuite avec des éléments du procès dans l’alliance, genre souverain de la littérature prophétique ; à des textes bibliques de la Sagesse enfin par des versets sous forme de sentences.
