A poem which finds its inspiration in Scripture realises a crossbreeding between Scripture and the contingencies of the poet's life. Scripture responds to the poet's longing for transformation in offering both the scenario and the dramatis personae. In grafting the scenario onto a real-life experience (with its slowness and its detours), the poem proposes a new incarnation of the scenario. But this incarnation in the poem remains symbolic and it does not dispense the poet from persuing, as any ordinary Christian, the concrete advent of the Kingdom: he finds the right tune in the tension between the poetical symbol and the realities which the symbol heralds.
