A number of recent studies discussing the genesis and growth of Christianity challenge several widespread ideas concerning the evolution of the nascent Church. Their conclusions, though not unanimous, draw our attention to a great complexity. They suggest a patient revaluation of our historic and social understanding of the milieu in which originated both the New Testament texts and the early Churches.
