Histoire et problématique des mensuels Prions en Église et Magnificat

The History and Problematic of the Monthly Journals « Prions en Église » and « Magnificat »

The monthly magazines Prions en Église and Magnificat are omnipresent in French speaking Catholic parish life. Although having appeared in France only recently, at the end of the 1980's, they originated from the liturgical movement of the inter-war years in Austria and Quebec. They can be characterized as a «disposible» version the Missels des fidèles, destined to contribute to the faithful's active participation in Sunday and weekday Masses. Magnificat furthermore has the principal goal of facilitating access to the Liturgy of the Hours. The high and growing number of subscriptions to these two monthlies proves the necessity of such media today. Their use however is not without problems; notably Prions en Église, in the preparations of liturgies and the celebrations themselves, risks being made a quasi-norm equal to the liturgical books. Lastly there is an ecological dimension to this type of «disposable» Missal.
