Magnifica Humanitas, the first encyclical devoted to artificial intelligence, draws on several conceptions of technology. This article highlights two underlying frameworks. The first, an instrumental one, understands AI as an object external to human agency through three perspectives — comparative, cooperative, and pharmacological — each marked by its own limitations: comparison reveals an already altered relational environment; cooperation exposes the pitfalls of dependence and the erosion of responsibility; and the pharmacological perspective ultimately founders on the question of dosage. The second framework, that of inhabiting — where technology is no longer an object to be regulated but an environment in which human existence is already immersed — is structured around four key gestures: disarming, building, loving, and living. By bringing out the encyclical’s internal dynamic, the article traces the gradual shift in the conceptual categories through which technology is understood.
