The Declaration of Augsburg, recently signed by the World Lutheran Federation and by the Roman Catholic Church, endorses a fundamental consensus regarding the doctrine of justification. Without ignoring or minimising the criticism which the text might here and there have received, one is bound to see in this document an agreement of historical significance, an essential step in the evolution of the ecumenical movement and in the relations between Catholics and Lutherans.
