The tragic events in Algeria which have prompted Mgr G. Piroird, bishop of Constantine and Hippo, to address this letter to his diocese need no presentation. The reader will note that the main scriptural quotations themselves have had, in the author's eyes, the value of events: their inclusion in the letter is called for by the very strength of the facts rather than by an effect of the author's reflexion. This, among other things, ought to retain the attention of contemporary theology.
