The Eucharist during lockdown: the reality of the Body of Christ

Are computer screens and laptops going to be the media that will enable the faithful take part in the Eucharist? The issue, being brought to light here because of the exponential increase in the number of Masses broadcast on the Internet in response to the consequences arising from the constraints imposed by the lockdown, obliges us to engage in a task of discernment which is both theological and pastoral. That is the aim of this article which, drawing on an analysis of something that is being underestimated physically and spiritually in a Mass transmitted on YouTube, is concerned to identify the theological challenges involved in order to clarify them in the light of the Church’s Tradition and draw from them a number of criteria and pastoral proposals for the coming years.

Les récents confinements ont été l’occasion d’une prolifération de messes diffusées en direct ou en différé grâce aux réseaux sociaux. Certaines ont pu même parfois attirer des milliers de téléspectateurs. Toutefois ces diffusions ont suscité de nombreuses questions, voire des divisions, tant chez les prêtres que chez les fidèles. On se souvient que l’introduction de la messe télévisée dans les années 60 avait déjà fait l’objet de vifs débats. Le grand théologien Karl Rahner suivi par d’autres s’était fermement opposé à la diffusion de messes télévisées au nom du respect dû à ce qui lui semblait le mystère essentiel de la vie de l’Église, nullement destiné à être exposé aux yeux de tous1, mais seulement des chrétiens.
