With reference to two recent Catechisms, the author considers the various ways of renewing the pastoral exercise of preparing both believers and unbelievers for death. He suggests the institution of lay ministers of contrition, of baptism and for the distribution of the Eucharist. He considers the traditional doctrine of the remission of sins in the reception of the Eucharist.
