Faith, a proposition for today's society: such is the project which has been initiated by the French bishops on the eve of the second millennium. One of the main initiators of this project makes here the reasons for it more explicit. It is above all an act of realistic discernment and a desire to serve a free commitment in faith. It is indeed necessary that faith would appear as a gift from God; that the Church would « resource » herself in that Source of her faith, and that she would propose faith as being a public act of freedom in secular society. In such a context faith remains a challenge: how should we make manifest the absolute dignity of every human person, and the Cross of Christ as the summit and the heart of any kind of evangelisation?
