By placing H. U. von Balthasar’s review of the work of his mentor Erich Przywara in the context of the young Swiss Jesuit’s training, this short introduction explains the vast conflicts that the history of philosophy has experienced over the notion of analogy. It shows the young Balthasar’s philosophical and theological orientations by pointing out the sources, but also makes clear the topicality of a thought that is still too little known today in Christian intellectual circles.
Nous sommes en 1933. Le germaniste suisse Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) n’est encore personne. Il vient de soutenir en 1929 une thèse surprenante sur l’histoire du problème eschatologique dans la littérature allemande. Quelques années plus tôt, à vingt ans, le jeune patricien helvétique qui rêvait d’être chef d’orchestre avait publié un ouvrage précoce Sur le développement de l’idée musicale.
Voici cinq ans, lors d’une retraite pour laïcs, le catholique lucernois avait discerné une vocation pour la Compagnie de Jésus qui l’avait amené en Bavière, près de Munich, au noviciat de Pullach. Le jeune adepte de Goethe y fait alors la rencontre époustouflée de celui qui est alors un géant de la pensée catholique : Erich Przywara (1889-1972).
