Scripture mythologised: from Magdalen to La Traviata, the story of a distortion

It is common in the West, since Gregory the Great, to gather several women from Jesus’s circle into a single figure of the repentant woman sinner. Painting, literature and mysticism have all exploited this image; and it is on this borderline that myth, Scripture and tradition have just been intermingled, at the service of a theology of repentance rather than an apostolicity of the feminine. Hence the urgent need, in the light of these distortions, to reinterpret the role of Mary Magdalen against what the Greek Fathers (including Romanos) have written about it, in order to make her quality of “apostle to the apostles” effective.

Lorsque l’on s’interroge sur le rôle des femmes qui accompagnaient Jésus, on s’aperçoit qu’une lecture plurimillénaire en a masqué les contours, allant parfois jusqu’à amalgamer les personnages. Délibéré ou non, le procédé a réussi à faire disparaître la place « des » femmes dans l’Église, pour mieux sublimer LA femme, de préférence dans ses attributs corporels de vierge ou de mère, et surtout sans jamais associer masculin et féminin à la valorisation de la Bonne Nouvelle.

Ainsi, depuis les premiers siècles jusqu’à aujourd’hui, Marie de Magdala, bien que nommée « apôtre des apôtres » dès le iiie siècle, fut la « victime » paradigmatique de cette démarche dans toute l’Europe occidentale.
