The question of the literal meaning is very nebulous today: is it the meaning intended by the authors ? Or is it the meaning attached to the historical context ? Or is it the meaning given by the structure of the text itself or by its canonicity ? There are just as many points of view tied to different hermeneutical positions. This article sticks with discovering first and foremost the literal meaning closest to its theological origin in the tradition of spiritual exegesis. There follows from this the progressive divergence from the development of modern hermeneutics. Finally the article tries to show how the contribution of the phenomenology of life to a philosophy of language and taking into account the connection between word and feeling, allow us to restore consistency to the literal meaning and so to draw anew from the spiritual understanding of the Scriptures.

Je me souviens de mon premier exposé d’Écriture sainte, lors de mes études de théologie, et des affres dans lesquelles me plongeait sa préparation, à la fois du fait de mon incompétence supposée, et de cette tendance si parisienne consistant à chercher à tirer des idées brillantes du texte commenté (le texte devenant alors un simple faire-valoir). Heureusement, un frère du séminaire me sortit de cette agitation angoissée par cette apostrophe vigoureuse : « Cesse de te compliquer la vie, tu as seulement à dire ce que le texte dit ! » Cette tautologie en apparence simpliste m’a permis d’opérer un véritable retournement : non plus projeter ma lumière sur le texte mais me laisser éclairer par lui. L’Écriture se mettait à parler, à me parler, et il s’agissait pour moi de dire cette Parole. Elle cessait d’être un objet extérieur et devenait…
