Burnout, an Urgent Pastoral Issue

Burnout affects a sizable part of the active population. An initial article described it and suggested an original reading index to explain its nature as well as its origin: in the context of a society of excess it would be a pathology of the gift of self. This second article applies it to the pastoral care of priests, but also of religious and pastoral workers. Having summarized a sample study conducted in 2004-2005 on the priests of the diocese of Padua, it shows that the priest is particularly exposed to burnout. Listening first to Scripture, it suggests as a remedy a series of means organized on the basis of the three “moments” of the gift: reception, appropriation and donation.

Dans une précédente livraison de la NRT, nous avons décrit le burn-out (BO) et proposé d’en expliquer la nature et l’origine comme une maladie du don de soi2. Cet article applique l’hypothèse au cadre particulièrement sensible — et pourtant encore largement ignoré — des prêtres, des religieux et, plus généralement, des agents engagés en pastorale.

Après avoir montré l’importance encore méconnue du BO en pastorale à partir d’une étude exemplaire (1), nous montrerons que le prêtre y est particulièrement exposé (2), ce qui invite à une prise en compte (3) et une prise en charge (4).
