Flying on the two wings of charity. The psalms of ascension commented by St. Augustine

In the Enarrationes on the Psalms of Ascension (Ps 119-133), St Augustine explains to his audience how to climb towards God. To the image of a ladder, inspired by the Latin title Canticum graduum, he adds that of the wings of the soul identified with the two precepts of the love of God and of the neighbour. In this way he gives us a rich teaching on charity by which we live in this life in peace and by which we arrive, in unity, at the Pax, the goal of our ascension, God himself.

De tout temps, et dans des cultures variées, on a décrit la vie spirituelle comme une série de degrés à gravir2. C’est donc assez naturellement que les premiers commentateurs chrétiens du psautier interprètent les Psaumes 119-133 à partir de leur titulus commun3 (Canticum graduum dans les Bibles latines) en référence à l’image traditionnelle de l’échelle spirituelle : à chacun des psaumes de la série correspond un gradus dans l’itinéraire spirituel de l’homme, pensé comme une ascension vers Dieu. Les « échelons » peuvent être considérés de deux points de vue : comme les étapes d’une ascension – ce qui ouvre à une interprétation dynamique des Cantica graduum, où l’on cherchera à reconnaître en chacun des quinze psaumes un degré d’avancement dans la voie spirituelle –, ou comme les montants d’une échelle sur lesquels on s’appuie pour…
