John Calvin, Francis de Sales and the Dry Bones Prophecy (Ezek 37) – First Part: Calvin’s Interpretations

In his immense theological work, John Calvin confronted himself twice with the “Dry Bones Prophecy” (Ezek. 37:1-14). In his Sermons delivered in 1554, he offered a moral application, which consists in the rising of the Church within history. In the Institutes prevails the eschatological interpretation: Ezekiel spoke about the final resurrection. This article analyses such interpretations with a critical Évaluation.

L’Europe du xvie siècle : la modernité naît progressivement, à travers soubresauts et conflits, au sein d’un peuple chrétien en ébullition. La Bible y joue un rôle central, et nous choisissons dans cet article l’un de ses interprètes les plus influents, Jean Calvin, pour le confronter avec un autre grand auteur légèrement postérieur, François de Sales. Nous adoptons un point très précis d’analyse, le recours à cette prophétie d’Ézéchiel où la « vision des ossements desséchés » est un message d’espérance envoyé au peuple en exil (Ez 37,1-14). Elle est expliquée par Calvin à deux reprises, dans l’Institution chrétienne et dans ses sermons sur Ézéchiel de 1554, avec un contraste très frappant. François y fait allusion à plusieurs reprises dans sa correspondance.
