Le péché originel. Son irréductible vérité

Marcel Neusch
Although violently disputed, especially during the XVIIIth century when it contradicted that century's optimism concerning human nature, the doctrine of original sin left a trace among certain thinkers (Kant, Fichte, Hegel and others). The fact that it returned in a secular form is the indication that it denotes an unavoidable, existential reality. This, in turn, invites a re-examination of its nature and of its function in the judgement of Christian dogmatic. In contrast to the Council of Trent, Vatican II did not concern itself directly with original sin, but one finds it again in later debates, notably in recent catechisms. As the dark side of our human condition, the flip side of the Good News, original sin reveals its truth only when it is put in relation to the promise of salvation.
