Mercy and Fidelity, The Fact of Israel in the Gospel according to St. Matthew1

Does the use of the term Israel in the Gospel of Matthew allow one to speak of the « rejection » of the Jews in the conception of the Church, as the people of God open to the nations? The article confronts the narrative originality of the first Gospel with the historical interpretations which have been made of it. The examination of the terms Israel, people, Jew, Church, nation and of Mt 8,11-12; 21,43; 27,25 allows us to understand how the newness of Christ manifests the fidelity of God towards his people: the first instance of the Church is Israel.

 

Le destin douloureux des Juifs d’Europe comme l’existence actuelle d’un État juif au Moyen-Orient donnent au nom d’Israël de nouvelles connotations. La communauté catholique qui prononce ce nom trois fois par jour dans sa prière2 doit indéniablement en tenir compte. Comment porter le nom d’Israël, comment le prier aujourd’hui ? Si personne ne nie la polysémie qui lui est attachée, l’accord paraît moins immédiat quand il s’agit d’en préciser la portée ecclésiologique.

Le christianisme n’a d’ailleurs pas manqué de glisser vers une lecture où la forme ancienne du peuple de Dieu pouvait s’opposer à sa condition nouvelle. Par le jeu facile des contrastes, le passage à l’Église se comprenait comme un remplacement, une substitution.
