Every causative verb in Aramaic (`af'el) or in Hebrew (hif'il) can have a «factitive» sense, or implicitly may have a «permissive» sense. Howewer, the Greek translaters only use the factitive sense, as in the case of Mt 6, 13, literally translated in the Vulgate: «Ne nos inducas». From the translation comes the ambiguity of a God who tempts, and also many ancient liturgical adaptations. The Aramaic specialists generally use here the «permissive» sense of the verb, since this eliminates the difficulty. They translate literally: «Let us not enter into temptation» (Mt 26, 41 and parallels). The «evil one» (v. 14) is the only tempter.
