Remarks on the history of the word “supernatural”. The tormented genesis of an article by Henri de Lubac

On the occasion of the upcoming publication of Surnaturel. Le désir naturel de Dieu, from the « Cahiers de la NRT » collection, this article describes the publication process of a first article by Father de Lubac, “Some remarks on the history of the word Supernatural”, which appeared in Nouvelle revue théologique in 1934. The various theological and ecclesiastical censures which the Jesuit from Lyon withstood in a close dialogue with the director of the review show that the difficulties which would arise at the time of the publication of Surnaturel in 1946 were already largely in the making twelve years earlier.

La publication du prochain Cahier de la NRT, Le désir de Dieu. Une introduction à l’œuvre du père de Lubac, et la récente nouvelle édition du livre d’Henri de Lubac, Surnaturel1, offrent à l’historien l’occasion de revenir sur la genèse quelque peu mouvementée d’un des articles à l’origine de l’ouvrage, « Remarques sur l’histoire du mot “surnaturel” », paru dans la Nouvelle Revue Théologique en 19342. Je le ferai ici à partir d’une source précieuse pour l’histoire de la revue, à savoir l’« Histoire3 » que Jean Levie, directeur de la revue pendant un quart de siècle, rédigea, à la fin de son mandat, et l’un des dossiers annexes à ce Mémoire4. Cela paraît d’autant plus intéressant que Surnaturel porte sur une question fondamentale en théologie, fort débattue à l’époque, celle de « pure nature » et qui tint fort à cœur à Lubac. Par…
