The responsibility of prayer in the ecclesiology of Edith Stein

Edith Stein did not write an ecclesiological work strictly speaking, but her reflections on the relation between person and community, as well as on personal responsibility, give a stimulus to rethink the place of prayer in the life of the Church. Taking up again three of Edith Stein’s texts (Freedom and Grace in 1921, Prayer in the Church and the last chapter of Finite Being and Eternal Being in 1936) shows that the living members of the mystical Body are free and responsible by their prayer.

Parler d’ecclésiologie chez Edith Stein, Thérèse-Bénédicte de la Croix au Carmel, peut paraître exagéré quand on sait qu’elle ne se situe pas en tant que théologienne et qu’elle n’a écrit aucun traité ou article d’ecclésiologie. Toutefois, on peut argumenter raisonnablement que sa réflexion philosophique sur le rapport entre personne et communauté lui permet de réfléchir sur l’Église du Christ et ses membres d’une manière stimulante. On pourrait dire que Stein développe en phénoménologue ce qu’affirmera plus tard le pape François, dans son encyclique sur l’écologie Laudato si’, à savoir que « toutes les créatures sont liées1 » entre elles. Cela vaut a fortiori pour les personnes qui forment ensemble le genre humain dans une unité qui – par le lien de l’humanité partagée – dépasse le temps et l’espace. Il serait intéressant de montrer…
