Virginal motherhood and divine filiation

Gérard Remy
Brought about by the work of Benedict xvi, The Childhood of Jesus, this study treats of the nature of the link between virginal motherhood and divine filiation in reference to the thesis formulated by Professor Ratzinger, of the compatibility of this filiation with a natural generation. Therefore it is necessary to accept the contingency of this link whose sole rationale is that it is highly appropriate. This raises the question of the reality of the humanity of Jesus, which Thomas Aquinas had already broached. This debate introduces an ecumenical element, as Protestant theology, apart from K. Barth, shows itself reserved with regard to a virginity which christology does not require. However one can observe an analogy between the origins of Jesus and his paschal destiny : the virginity of Mary is the sign of divine filiation as the empty tomb is the sign of the resurrection.

La réponse avancée est franchement positive quant à la deuxième question posée. Que la naissance de l’enfant Jésus se place sous le signe contingent et non contraignant de la maternité virginale motive la réflexion que nous tentons. Comment justifier cette virginité…
