The outpouring of the Holy Spirit, sacraments and charisms

This article examines the question of how to interpret the increasingly widespread charismatic celebrations of ‘baptism in the Spirit’ or ‘outpouring of the Spirit’, given that Catholic doctrine clearly states that confirmation is a full participation in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1302). The outline will help to understand that Jesus himself experienced the presence of the Spirit in the form of ongoing permanent renewal. In the Body of Christ that is the Church, baptism and confirmation already make it possible to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as constant spiritual growth. Through God’s generosity, charisms spring up freely in the Church for the good of all. They can allow for notes of profusion and newness to resonate in a way that lets the sacraments shine forth.

Le don de l’Esprit dans le Nouveau Testament a toujours été associé au baptême et à la confirmation. Dans une de ses catéchèses hebdomadaires sur les sacrements, saint Jean-Paul ii le soulignait de manière lumineuse :

Le sacrement de la Confirmation « perpétue, en quelque sorte, dans l’Église, la grâce de la Pentecôte » (CÉC 1288). Le Baptême, que la tradition chrétienne appelle « porche de la vie dans l’Esprit » (ibid. 1213), nous fait renaître « d’eau et d’Esprit » (cf. Jn 3,5) en nous faisant participer de façon sacramentelle à la mort et à la résurrection du Christ (cf. Rm 6,1-11). La Confirmation, quant à elle, nous fait pleinement participer à l’effusion de l’Esprit Saint de la part du Seigneur Ressuscité1.
