Theology and Holiness in the Work of Louis Bouyer

For too long a disastrous divorce between theology and spiritual life has affected the Church. The 20th century has largely reversed this tendency and it is in this perspective that the theological endeavour of Louis Bouyer is placed. For the oratorian, theology, by nature contemplative and eucharistic, is a companion to the way of conversion and sanctification of the theologian him/herself as to those addressed. Along this way the Virgin Mary and the saints are a model for the theologian.

En 1948, Hans Urs von Balthasar publie un article remarqué, « Théologie et sainteté », dans la revue Dieu vivant1. À l’époque, Louis Bouyer, prêtre de l’Oratoire depuis quatre ans2, commence lui aussi à acquérir une certaine notoriété théologique, pour les articles et ouvrages déjà publiés depuis quelques années. Il est justement l’un des principaux collaborateurs de la revue, et l’article de son aîné lui fait forte impression3. Trente ans plus tard, il s’y réfère encore, dans Le métier de théologien :
