Every September 14, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast immediately confronts us with a paradox: how did the instrument of torture and humiliation that was the cross become the sign of victory over death and the emblem of Christians? How can we understand that the Christian community honors as “glorious” a reality that, historically, signified the shame reserved for criminals and slaves?

To shed light on this tension, a twofold approach is necessary: the history of the iconographic representations of the cross, and the theological reflection which, in the 20th century, explored the relationship between cross and glory in Rahner, Pannenberg, Balthasar, Malevez, Vetö, and Durand.
